Community Center Update: March 2008
Incorporated on December 10, 1976,
Gold Country
Community Council, Inc.
(formerly
the Senior Citizens Foundation of Western Nevada County), operates the Gold
Country Community
Center and the
High Noon Senior Nutrition Program.
In addition GCCC, Inc. sponsors the Nevada
County Youth
Center
and the Jean Lutz Firewood Program (each with its own expenses and
streams of
income)
The past year posed many challenges
affecting
participation
and income. Starting
January 2nd,
half of the building was closed for repairs to the foundation under the
kitchen. All of the
equipment was
removed from the kitchen including the walk-in refrigerator and freezer
and
stored in the dining room.
The nutrition program operated from
the Nevada
City Senior
Apartments on Old Tunnel
Road
in the Brunswick
basin. There was an
amazing effort of
cooperation while we shared space with the staff at the apartments and
meal
delivery drivers figured out where to park and load the carriers with
the
meals. During this
time we also served
meals in the dining room at the apartments, although fewer people than
usual
participated.
There was
approximately $7,000 in
additional costs to the
nutrition program directly related to serving in a remote location. Severe weather and power
outages also
impacted service.
The regularly scheduled fitness and
dance classes
were
relocated to other buildings on the fairgrounds.
Students
persevered in rainy and cold weather
hiking to from the parking lot to these locations.
We finally returned to full operation
at the
Community
Center on March 12th.
Two
days later with more than 100 expected for our Corned Beef and Cabbage
St.
Patrick’s Celebration, we came to work only to find that the
refrigerator had
been improperly reinstalled and failed during the night causing a loss
$600 in
perishable food. Ham
was purchased to
replace the spoiled food and we sort of saved the day.
The Friendship Wednesday volunteers helped to
ease everyone through the disappointment of no Corned Beef and to enjoy
the
entertainment and being together.
Things looked brighter toward the end
of March and
we set to
work on the best Celebrity Waiter Dinner ever, a Pirates’ Soiree. We also convened a Town
Hall Meeting to
address the future of the Community center and then set about to have a
Rent
Party and attempt to raise the $36,000 required for rent for the year
commencing July 1st.
